About us
We are evangelical Christians committed to the good news of salvation in Christ alone, by grace alone, through faith alone, as revealed in Scripture alone, to the glory of God alone. We are from a wide range of church backgrounds with different approaches on all sorts of issues, but firmly united in our love for Jesus and his good news.
You can join St Matthew's without supporting the Church of England. We hold to the Biblical convictions of the Church of England statements of belief, in spiritual partnership with the majority of Anglicans worldwide. But many of us have concerns about the direction of the current Church of England leadership and cannot commend all its ministers or churches.
St Matthew's Church was planted 150 years ago in a deprived area. They chose "we preach Christ crucified" for the first sermon. The congregation grew quickly and started two more churches, schools and a medical centre. Many joined during a time of charismatic renewal in the 1970s. In 2008 newcomers joined as a "church graft" from St Andrew the Great in central Cambridge. We are praying that God might enable us to send a preacher and a team in a similar way in the coming years.
